Efforts to Slow Pandemic Could Be Crippled by New Wave of Drug-Resistant HIV Strains PDF Print E-mail
According to Time (1/14, Harrell), "Last January, a team of scientists at the World Health Organization (WHO) published a study in...The Lancet making the audacious claim that the tools already exist to end the AIDS epidemic." Based on their "mathematical models, the researchers claimed that universal HIV testing followed by the immediate treatment of newly infected patients with antiretroviral drugs could eliminate the disease from even the most heavily infected populations within 10 years." They may not have accounted for drug resistance, however.

Green Tea, Leafy Vegetables Offer Protective Effect Against Lung Cancer PDF Print E-mail

According to the Los Angeles Times (1/12, Healy) "Booster Shots" blog, "finding foods and nutritional supplements that can help prevent cancer is one of those one-step-forward, two-steps-back areas of research." Thus, "cancer researchers these days are at pains to hold their enthusiasm in check over new studies that seem to offer new hope in the prevention of lung cancer."

Now, a team of scientists in Taiwan says that "drinking green tea may counter the effects of smoking on lung cancer risk," Bloomberg News (1/13, Gale) reports. In fact, "for both smokers and non-smokers, those who didn't drink green tea had a fivefold greater risk of lung cancer than people who drank at least one cup a day," while "smokers who didn't consume any had a 13-fold higher risk of the cancer, compared with smokers who drank at least one cup."

United States Donates more than $2.7 billion to Kenya to Fight HIV/AIDS PDF Print E-mail
Bloomberg News (12/16, McGregor) reported, "The US plans to provide Kenya with more than $2.7 billion between 2009 and 2013 to fight AIDS in the East Africal nation."  The "funding commitment is more than double the $1.3 billion the US gave Kenya in the previous five years," according to US Ambassador Michael Ranneberger.  "As part of today's accord, Kenyan Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to increase spending on anti-retroviral drugs and laboratory work on AIDS by 10 percent a year."  Notably, "Kenya is the single largest beneficiary of funding from the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief program."
