In response to cases of A(h1N1) influenza, reported in Mexico and the United States of America, the Director-General convened a meeting of the Emergency Committee to asses the situation and advise her on appropriate responses.

Concerning public health measures, in line with the Regulations, the Director-General is recommending, on the advice of the Committee, that all countries intensify surveillance for unusual outbreaks of influenza-like illness and severe pneumonia.

The IFBLS council is very glad to announce that Janna Malseed has now started working as the Office Administrator of IFBLS.

Janna lives in Hamilton and has experience working in NGO (Non-Governmental Organisations) environment. She previously worked for 20 years for the Musicians Guild, and very much enjoys working with people and communicating with members.

The theme for the International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day is Cancer – “Today find the cause - tomorrow find the cure”.

According to WHO cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide.

Cancer accounts for 7.9 million deaths in 2007. Experts have made an estimate that about 30 percent of cancer deaths can be prevented.

Worldwide deaths from cancer are projected to continue to rise, and by 2030 there is an estimate of 12 millions deaths.
